7 September 2010—Rachel Berger to unleash her wit and wisdom at ECCV September State Conference

7 September 2010

Rachel Berger, acclaimed comedian, novelist, columnist, broadcaster and sometime Calendar Girl, is the latest name to join the speaker’s roll for this month’s Statewide Conference of the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV).

The child of Holocaust survivors, Ms Berger has been a lifelong supporter of disadvantaged communities and a proud champion of migrants from newly-arrived and non-English speaking backgrounds.

Mr Sam Afra, Chairperson of the ECCV, said he was thrilled that Ms Berger had agreed to be a part of the 2010 biennial state conference.

“This is really a coup for us and a treat for everyone attending the conference,” Mr Afra said.
“Rachel Berger is one of the country’s most celebrated writers and performers with a genuine interest in the issues that confront Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds and social circumstances.”

Ms Berger arrived in Australia at the age of five not being able to speak a word of English.

Her hit 2008 one-woman show, Hold The Pickle, included stories about her experiences growing up as a refugee in Melbourne with parents left severely traumatised by the war.

Rachel Berger joins a host of leading lights at this month’s conference which seeks to canvass input into what will become the next cultural diversity policy model for Victoria.

Speakers include key industry and community figures such as academic Andrew Jakubowicz, Professor of Sociology from University of Technology Sydney, and Todd Harper, Chief Executive Officer of VicHealth.

“If anything is certain from the August federal election, it is that Australians are desperate for a clearly defined vision for the future that more accurately reflects the current social landscape and responds more quickly to potential issues as they arise,” Mr Afra explained.  “That is why we have kept the focus of September’s conference on what comes next for policy makers, service providers and members of the public alike.”
