ECCV POLICY COMMITTEES

ECCV currently has a number of policy committees that provides a vehicle for member organisations and those with a specific interest to meet and form policies around issues of concern to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The committees play a crucial role for the ECCV in identifying emerging issues and providing a strong advocacy voice for ethnic communities.

Health Policy Committee

Issues addressed in the Health Policy Committee are those identified as significantly impacting the health and well-being of people from CALD backgrounds and/or new and emerging communities. Examples of health issues that may be addressed in the committee include:

·                Health Services
·                Language services
·                Cultural responsive service delivery
·                Mental Health (including supported accommodation)
·                Refugee health and well-being
·                Children’s health and well-being
·                Rural health
·                Health promotion
·                Health inequality

New and Emerging Communities Committee

The ECCV New and Emerging Communities Committee was established in September 2006.

The aim of the committee is to identify key issues affecting various communities, provide leadership training to community members, organise forums on issues like the political system, health, housing and accommodation and employment.

The committee’s current work includes:

  • Development of an Australia settlement assistance policy document
  • Advocating government and non-government agencies on issues that relate to new and emerging communities
  • Assisting new and emerging communities’ organisations
  • Assisting the Australia Africa Democracy Project

Youth Policy Committee

Young people from CALD and new and emerging communities face a range of emerging issues that are addressed through discussion in the committee of policies and practices.

Some of the key issues facing CALD young people include accessibility to services, affordability and safety of public transport, racism and discrimination; career development and training; housing and unemployment and underemployment.

The Youth Policy Committee is run by young people for young people.

The following policy areas form the basis of policy review and development for the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria for the period July 2006 to December 2007.

 

At the Victorian State level:

·                 Aged care for culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD);

·                 Language services   provision;

·                 New and emerging communities;

·                 CALD communities and drug and alcohol issues;

·                 CALD communities and families, women, youth and children

·                 Victorian Government’s proposed Human Rights Charter; and

·                 CALD communities and mental health issues.

 

At the Federal Government level:

 

The ECCV will keep a watching brief on the following areas:

·                 Industrial relations changes;

·                 Counter-terrorism laws; and  

·                 Support for Multiculturalism.
